Food is a basic need for any living organism including mankind. We simply cannot afford living without food. One could say food is the second most important thing for the existence of any living organism. One can manage to survive without all the other basic needs for a given amount of time but you simply cannot survive without breathing in oxygen or having some food to provide energy for your survival.
Mankind has always been preoccupied with looking for food. Even today, the main purpose for working is usually known as the search for food. People usually eat daily, usually several times within a day. The body is usually adapted to demand for food whenever the stomach is empty. This is a way to ensure that the body is always well supplied with the source of energy needed to run the body.
Despite the repeated demand for nourishment and the subsequent consumption of food by man, it does not always mean that man consumes what the body really needs. Human beings need to feed on several types of nutrients to provide all the needed nutritional requirements for the body. When the stomach is empty and one feels hungry, the hunger does not specify the specific amounts of the different nutrients needed by the body.
The absence of vital nutrients in the body usually leads to diseases and disorders in the body. Many times, this is the only way that the common man would know that they are lacking some nutrients in their body. Many of these signs are physically visible to the eye.
For example, a person suffering from a deficiency of proteins in his diets will have kwashiorkor – a condition that is easily identifiable since the individual suffering from kwashiorkor will have a big pronounced abnormal belly.
For the modern day person, it is easy to get access to all the necessary nutrients for the body. However, the problem for the modern day man is that he is likely to take too much of a particular nutrient. Taking too much of a nutrient can be detrimental and this is especially seen in instances when man takes too much carbohydrates.
When one consumes too many carbohydrates, the excess carbohydrates are converted to fat. That is why a fully grown adult might one day wake up to find out that they cannot get into their favorite pair of leggings. This is because they have consumed too much of carbohydrates which have consequently made them fat.
Being fat or overweight is a clearly visible condition that when extreme is known as obesity. Obesity can lead to numerous health disorders including heart attacks, high blood pressure, arthritis, gout, and many other life threatening conditions.
There are other diseases or conditions that are not necessarily caused by insufficiency of nutrients but can be aggravated by the components in the food. For example, acne is a condition not caused by nutrient deficiency but a diet constituting dairy products, fatty foods, or starchy foods may aggravate it. Acne can be prevented using natural remedies.
