Julien Smith explains Social Networking

Monday, September 11, 2006 - Filed under: Podcasts

During our drive to PodCamp Boston, we put Julien Smith on the spot to explain social networking and how Podcasters can use this phenomenon to build an audience. We learned much more that we had expected. Among other things, Julien explains what Podcasters can learn from bloggers and how to use Technorati, Digg, del.icio.us and MySpace.

Warning!!! Explicit language

  1. Explicit language? Julian and explicit language?

I have to tell you this. Julian was doing the rockstar thing whenever he and I spoke, but listening to him here makes me realize that I missed the opportunity to pick the mind of someone really intelligent, thought provoking, and engaging.

Thanks for putting this on, fellas.

PodCamp Montreal soon? Mitch Joel said yes.

  2. I am so sorry I did not spend more time talking with Julien at podcamp. Since he is waaaaay cooler than I am, I was intimidated. I can say he gives great hugs, and this audio interview is one of the best pieces of help any podcaster can have. Julien- you are my superhero! – Whitney

  3. Julien Smith is a rockstar at search engine optimization, too. Get to know him – he’s got a fully functional mind beneath the rockstar exterior, and is one of the people to watch… closely. Possibly with surveillance.

  5. [...] Big time Julien Smith morning. I’ve listened to the dude on The Canadian Buffet and then on In Over Your Head. I’m going to be swearing like a sailor for the rest of the day now because of it. He’s also fueling my desire for a new tattoo and hiking the AT. I can only imagine the conversations we would have on that walk! What do you think Julien? Are you aware that the Darkside is fun? *laugh* I mean that in a nice community sort of way. Don’t worry, I’m ok. I just haven’t had enough coffee yet and have been busy all morning already. [...]

  6. As an old school digger (May 05) and a somewhat highly ranked digger (310 out of the hundreds and thousands of them) there are a few things to be careful of n digg. Many people think ‘oh I will register a bunch of account names and digg my own stories’ well digg tracks IPs (Kevin Rose has said this on Diggnation and TWIT) and then those diggs will not count in the promotion algorithm. As well, diggers are really vigilant about people that ONLY digg their friends stories. One of the top dugg stories in the past few months is about groups like this. Indeed, the promotion algorithm will now (soon anyway according to Kevinrose.com) put less weight on diggs that are from freinds that only digg freinds stories.

I have found that forum participation, as Julien mentioned, can do wonders. Most of my hits on thunderbird six come from the TWIT forums. I post there a lot.

  7. Wow great interview, or should I say soliloquy? The iTunes link on your myspace page is a great idea I wish I had thought of it. You can also add a html player to your myspace, like the Podcast Pickle player, that will load and play your podcast automatically so you don’t had to keep adding them.

  8. [...] I had a chit chat with Mark and Bob during the ride down to PodCamp where we talked all about social networking and why influencing the text-based web matters a great deal. Take a listen if you want to learn a thing or two about how to promote yourself as a podcaster on the web. Also of interest: g5 for powerbook? [...]

  13. That was some really interesting info passed on about how we Podcasters are doing it all wrong … so we’ve been following them and are up on myspace and are doing the tehnorati tag thing … let’s see if they make a difference.

A blog wouldn’t be a blog without the comments from other people – i think its a great idea.

  15. [...] When Bob Goyetche, Julien Smith and I piled into a car for the seven hour drive to Boston last Friday, I had no idea that the trip would seem so short. The conversation was engaging, particularly Julien’s one hour run down of how Podcasters are building their audience the wrong way (listen here) – a great preview of what we would experience at PodCamp Boston 2006. 20. [...] I’m very excited about this show because it really does push the conversation forward and provides an informative destination for the people that (on their first awareness of podcasting) ask the question “how do I make money from it”.  I think that it will be to the money conversation what our September 2006 car episode with Julien Smith was to the Social Networking conversation.
