I have never been prouder to be a listener….

  2. [...] Social anxiety affects people of all walks of life, stuttering or not. As an introvert who knows just a little bit about social anxiety (no kidding, eh?), I have to say that what’s helped me a lot in the last couple of years is just going out to events, podcamps, meet-ups. At first it was really harrowing, and I have had some awful moments (more because of panic than anything).

But as I’ve got to know more and more people, as I’ve become more comfortable with them, I’m finding it easier to do. Yes, I still have the occasional panic attack (and yes, I give myself permission to walk away if I have to), but fewer and fewer of them.

I now know a core of people in the community who make me feel comfortable and welcome, and I figure if they like me, then maybe the voices in my head that tell me I’m stupid are wrong, you know?

And I would never have been able to stand up at Podcamp Montreal and do a presentation two years ago. I still had a panic attack right before I did it, but I pulled it off, and I really believe it’s because I knew that everyone was being so supportive that I was able to get up there and do it.

My next goal? To start trying to approach people at events, instead of still hanging back a bit. Don’t know when I’ll get there, but I’m sure that I will.

I’m sorry that I’ll miss the Toronto meet-up. I’ll be traveling.

I’m looking forward to hearing your upcoming interviews!
