Community: Why it’s the ONLY thing that matters presented by Whitney Hoffman at PAB2008

Whitney produces the LDpodcast.

We talk a lot about community in Social Media circles. Communities grow up organically around our individual interests; but how do you act as a catalyst to form community? How do we deal with the inevitable problems that arise in communities? We’ve all witnessed times when the community values are breached or sprained; how do we handle those situations when they occur? When someone tries to join a community, how do we make them feel at home?

This session is the perfect opportunity to discuss the development and navigation of communities as we start to face real-world problems in our cyber-worlds, including:

  • When does a community get too big?
  • When do you start your own community?
  • When is a new community seen as competition and get treated as such by others?
  • How do we define and sub-define our groups?
  • Are communities, commodities? Can they be bought and sold? Should they?

Thank you very much to the PAB2008 partners and silver sponsors:

  1. I listened to this episode on my way into work this morning and found it very interesting. I’ve been paying more attention to building community more lately. I liked Brogan’s point about making sure that others in the community are recognized as experts and how that takes away some of the burden of having a large community.

  2. This talk was the best I saw, now I must say all I saw were good, but this one rocked.
