Social (Media) Science presented by Dave Brodbeck at PAB2008
Dave’s (main) podcasts:
[NOT worksafe] Why would you use social media tools such as facebook, IM clients, blogging, and, of course, podcasting to reach people? Would anyone really care? Dave will draw on his experiences as an academic who podcasts his lectures and uses social media tools to engage his students. He has been podcasting his lectures for a little over two years and routinely uses facebook, MSN messenger and comments on his blog for class discussion. Many academics, professionals and organizations are reticent, if not downright frightened, of using these new tools to get the word out about a subject.
Dave shares the results of a survey about his students’ use of social media for academic purposes and will compare student grades in classes where lectures were podcasted and where they were not. He argues (with real data) that these tools help students learn, and that these tools can help anyone engage a potential audience.

I listen to Dave’s lectures and actually take notes. (I know, I know). I write down things I find fascinating about the human brain. Dave is an engaging speaker/teacher and I’ve learned a lot by listening. I never had a passionate prof like Dave in University, not a one. They were all flat, boring, monotone drones. After having many inspiring teachers at the grade school/high school level, I was really disappointed to show up to University to find it filled with profs who lacked passion for teaching.
Anyway, thanks for posting this. I’m glad to hear I’m not the ONLY non student who listens. Wish we (Ross and I) could have been at PAB 08!

I found this very entertaining to listen to on my way home from work yesterday. It got me thinking about how I might propose podcasting to the company I work for.

@Daniel excellent! I am glad you liked it, it was fun to do. The over the ear mic was a bit odd, but I got used to it when I realized it was just like an xbox Live mic..
