100: How do you communitize your podcast?

Thursday, April 17, 2008 - Filed under: Podcasts

The Meetup that launched CPBThis is one of those milestones in a podcaster’s life when they sit back, considers their accomplishment and then crumples in a heap when they realize the number of hours that have gone into their hobby. Not us! We’ve been doing this long enough to enjoy each minute, each episode and especially each interaction. And then we hit publish and start planning the next show.

Don’t forget, today is April K17 day.

  1. Hope your butts aren’t too sore. Congrats again! – Bruce

    Hi Mark & Bob,

Congratulations on making it to an episode between 99 and 101!

Need to point out one mistake Mark made in this episode — while it’s true that Valerie was recorded at the Toronto meetup speaking about communitizing vs monetizing, that’s not where the term got introduced to the new media lexicon (although from what I’ve been able to find it has been applied in other domains previously).

Katherine of Purl Diving first brought it up at PodCamp Toronto 2008 — she spoke to Chris Brogan about it at the Imperial PUBlic Library on Saturday evening and it was a new term to him, so I think that shows it must not have been in widespread use before if the estimable Mr. Brogan hadn’t heard it used in the new media context.

Katherine also talked about it at the Toronto meetup — that’s what got Valerie, Scarborough Dude, John Meadows, Ninja and others at the meetup talking about it in turn.

Just wanted to set the record straight about the etymology for when it gets added the dictionary — or should that be Podictionary? ;-)

    Rob

  3. Mark says:

    Hey Rob!

No matter the etymology, I really like the word and how it balances the monetizing talk.

I think I actually noted in the show (I haven’t relistened to it) that I don’t believe Valerie had actually coined the term, only spoken of it that night. I did that because prior to recording the show, I did a cursory search on Google and found that it had identified a number of instances of the term.

Your comment inspired me to check in with Google, again. There are 2,260 occurrences of ‘communitize’ in the search responses. The earliest reference on the first page that I received goes back to September 16, 2006 (NBC to Communitize ‘iVillage’). Digging deeper, I found a US Government PDF with ‘communitize’ in it.

Anyway, the cat’s out of the bag now. Who knows where this can go!

    Mark

  4. Valerie says:

Yes, Rob, I’d told Mark that on twitter and posted a comment on the last show. It seems truth is trumped by momentum. :-)

  5. Robin says:

Congrats guys!! Thanks for leading with class and humour…

ps. At podcamp Ottawa you inspired me to get my own domain – so I did! Accordingly, please change my URL in the show notes to http://www.consciousimages.org
    Thanks!

  6. Tim Coyne says:

    Congrats on 100!!!!!!

I’m late to the party but the beers still flowing and I’m dancing on a table in my panties.

    Woo hoo!!!!

  7. shane says:

I’m jumping out of a cake for you guys, oh, and I’m wearing a thong and paisties.

  8. Thanks for the mention on our 100th guys. So, I get two for my lectures and one for Broca’s at PAB eh…. (by that I mean certificates..) We had a local listener drop off a framed certificate we put on the wall, that was pretty cool.
